La recesión económica de cinco años
ha tenido un impacto negativo en la investigación científica, y se
necesita un mayor apoyo para que la investigación médica mejore la
salud humana, dijo hoy Tim Hunt, ganador del Premio Nobel, en una
entrevista exclusiva con Xinhua en el Foro Económico Mundial que se
sostiene en Davos, Suiza.

Hunt, ganador del Premio Nobel 2001
en fisiología o medicina, indicó que existe una tendencia a
recortar el gasto en el presupuesto para la investigación,
posiblemente engañoso para muchos gobiernos y malo para las jóvenes
generaciones.

El bioquímico británico, quien ganó
el Nobel por descubrir las moléculas de las proteína que controlan
la división celular, dijo que cerca de 80 por ciento del
presupuesto para investigación es administrado por las autoridades
nacionales, y en épocas de crisis existe una tendencia a recortar
el gasto.

“El peligro de los recortes de
corto plazo en el financiamiento para la investigación es que se
destruye completamente la base de la investigación y en realidad
podría ser destruida durante generaciones, porque en alguna parte
del mundo habrá gente que no sufre recortes”, afirmó.

Hunt agregó que Reino Unido ha
realizado un trabajo exitoso de mantenimiento de su sistema de
presupuesto para la investigación, sin embargo, la situación es
distinta en muchos otros países europeos que sufren recesión.

Un ejemplo contrario al británico
es España. La ciencia española se estaba desarrollando bastante
bien, sobre todo por el éxito del gobierno, incluidos los gobiernos
locales, que destinaban bastante dinero para la construcción de
laboratorios y para crear carreras atractivas para los
científicos.

“Pero ahora, repentinamente, llegan
las restricciones y todos se van a ir. Como país lo que menos se
desea es perder a la gente más talentosa. En términos generals, una
vez que se pierden, ya no regresan. Se pierde una generación”,
afirmó.

El investigador dijo que el
financiamiento suficiente es crucial para mantener a las jóvenes
generaciones interesadas en la investigación científica, y los
maestros deben desempeñar un papel mucho más importante al
