Con los premios se reconocen las iniciativas y contribuciones al sector turístico que son innovadoras y consonantes con los principios del Código Ético Mundial para el Turismo. Desde su inauguración en 2003 la OMT ha premiado a más de 70 eruditos, visionarios e instituciones de los sectores público y privado, así como a ONG.

Los premios de la OMT se dividen en diferentes categorías. Hay dos premios a particulares: Premio Ulises de la OMT a la Excelencia en la Creación y Difusión de Conocimientos, y Premio de la OMT a una Trayectoria Profesional (cerrado a la presentación de candidaturas).

El pasado año el Dr. Tej Vir Singh, erudito que ha dedicado toda su carrera a la enseñanza y la investigación en el ámbito del turismo, recibió el Premio a la Excelencia en la Creación y Difusión de Conocimientos, mientras que el Premio a una Trayectoria Profesional recayó en el periodista Richard Quest. Ambos han contribuido al fomento de un desarrollo turístico competitivo y sostenible mediante investigaciones académicas o reportajes.

Por otro lado, los premios a iniciativas turísticas se dividen en: Premio Ulises de la OMT a la Innovación en Políticas Públicas y Gobernanza; Premio Ulises de la OMT a la Innovación en las Empresas; Premio Ulises de la OMT a la Innovación en las Organizaciones No Gubernamentales; y Premio Ulises de la OMT a la Innovación en Investigación y Tecnología.

Por segundo año consecutivo la ceremonia de entrega de los premios, que se celebrará el 28 de enero de 2015, estará copresidida por la OMT e Ifema|Fitur, Feria Internacional de Turismo de Madrid. El día anterior a la ceremonia tendrá lugar un simposio sobre los premios de la OMT en el que se subrayará la importancia de la innovación para el turismo y se presentarán los conocimientos y logros de los finalistas.
