La coalición europea de 20 asociaciones contra las minas tóxicas Bang! Ban Cyanide, de la que forman parte cuatro plataformas españolas, pedirán al próximo comisario europeo de Medio Ambiente, Karmenu Vella, que incluya la prohibición de la minería a base de cianuro en su agenda de trabajo.
Según ha informado hoy esta organización en una nota de prensa, varios eurodiputados se van a hacer eco de esas peticiones y preguntarán al candidato Karmenu Vella sobre su posición al respeto.
Según la nota difundida por la coalición en España “ha llegado el momento de exigir que los responsables europeos tomen por fin medidas y hagan que la minería a base de cianuro pertenezca al pasado”.

En 2010 el Parlamento Europeo votó a favor de prohibir la minería a base de cianuro, debido a los riesgos que plantea esta tecnología para la salud humana y para el medio ambiente, ahora “queremos convertir este voto en una realidad, pidiendo al Sr.Vella que haga cumplir la resolución y actúe en consecuencia”, ha exigido la organización.
Los argumentos de esta coalición europea de organizaciones no gubernamentales, grupos de acción y comunidades – entre las que se cuentan la “Plataforma Oro No” (Asturias) “Plataforma Salvemos Cabana“, “ContraMINAcción” y “Defensa de Coroesto e Bergantiños” (Galicia), entre otros se basan en los daños a la salud y la naturaleza.
“La minería moderna destruye el medio ambiente, produce contaminación por un largo período de tiempo, utiliza grandes cantidades de productos químicos altamente tóxicos como el cianuro y también provoca el desplazamiento de comunidades enteras”.
Sin embargo “la ciudadanía europea desconoce la procedencia de los metales que se utilizan para fabricar los ordenadores, dispositivos electrónicos y teléfonos móviles”, señala la plataforma.
El cianuro es un elemento altamente tóxico que puede ocasionar problemas respiratorios, cardiovasculares e intestinales entre otros, ya que puede ser absorbido simplemente a través del contacto con la piel, tanto que “sólo una cucharada de una solución de cianuro al 2 % mata a un ser humano” advierten.
Por eso “nos negamos a aceptar que una sustancia química tan venenosa se pueda seguir utilizando en un continente densamente poblado”, que además cuenta con importantes reservas de la biodiversidad que se están viento igualmente afectadas.
En altas concentraciones el cianuro es letal para la vida acuática, lo que provoca no solo una gran cantidad de peces muertos, sino también la introducción de esta sustancia en el resto del ecosistema y la cadena alimenticia.
A estos impactos se suman los “recurrentes accidentes mineros, que muestran su impacto devastador” o las prácticas que arrastran a la pobreza y la dependencia con “industrias extractivas vinculadas a la corrupción y a decisiones políticas impuestas desde arriba”.EFE
